"Free At Last" Diptych Release - Erie, Pennsylvania, USA

"Urban Fall" Single Release - Tornoto, Ontaro, Canada

Above are photoessays completed by Chosis.
Below are photographs that Chosis has added a narrative to to help guide the viewer to his prespective.

Chosis almost never asks subjects for permission to take their photograph. There is no expectation of privacy in public which means it is completely legal to take photographs of individuals without asking them however this is not why he does not ask them. Many photographers consider it rude, intrusive or even creepy to take people's photo without asking. Chosis completely understand this mindset and does not completely disagree with their sentiment. The reason Chosis non-consensually snaps photos is because by asking the subject to take their photo the artist is corrupting the authentic realism of the scene. This action transforms a candid, accurately truthful scene into a staged, prepackaged planned fabricated scene.

When a subject knows you are about to take an image of them they will attempt to present themselves in less than truthful manner. They will quickly contort themselves physically and emotionally into a society approved, cookie cutter, falsely mainstream representation. To Chosis this is lying to his audience. Life is too short to screw his audience. His work has integrity. Chosis will not mispresent his work as truth if it is counterfeit. At a bare minimum he owes his audience a sincerely honest and straight representation of reality. Studio photography is fine and absolutely has its place but Chosis will not attempt to bring the studio into the streets.

*I will ask for permission to photograph subjects unable to physically avoid my lens, such as disabled individuals. ⠀

Collapsed on a hustling sidewalk in Toronto. Stroke? Alcohol intoxication? Hypoglycemic syncope? Thousands of Torontonians walk around him in the hour I witness. Every single pedestrian notices him, it's impossible not to. His face is concealed by a hood. This man could be your father, brother or son. At least check his face to see if you know him!⠀ ⠀ His unresponsive body is cold and limp. Pupils constricted. How long he has been here? "This man needs help can I use your phone" is not a phrase the locals respond to as I am ignored thrice. He needs a naloxone injection like a banker needs a paycheck.⠀ ⠀ At first I thought he was lost but it quickly became clear he was stranded. Stranded by a society that does not value productivity insolvency. A stripped gear does not increase output of the GDP machine. Socially invisible. "Not my problem". Perhaps less afraid of him and more afraid of what he represents. Abject failure to integrate into the social network. His presence on the sidewalk incites unwelcome introspective thoughts inside us. The concept of an old man dying man alone far away from anyone who ever loved him forces each passerby to assess their reflection in the ego-mirror and review how they define success. "Could this be me next week?". A quick text to a loved one acts as acute chemical absorbance for this aberration.⠀ ⠀ I put him in the safety position and leave. This is not a Toronto I expected, the ugly downside of a culture of non-hostility /involvement and assembly line social introversion. I refuse to believe something like this could happen back home in the more dense and extroverted midtown or downtown Manhattan. People have died unnoticed in NYC in their taxis, tents or sitting on the metro but never laying on a busy sidewalk in an unnatural position at noon. A new low for humanity and the "first world". I am done taking photographs for the day. Even though I left him he stays with me the whole rest of the trip.⠀ ⠀ #dyingrightnow #forgottenplaces #lostchild #lostplaces #lostlove #uncaring #torontostyle #toronto_insta #strandedonland #strandedonanisland #strandedcollection #emt #torontostreetphotography #torontostreet #torontostreets

Toronto Eaton Centre, Toronto, Canada⠀ ⠀ I remember way back listening to speeches given by Technology CEOs bragging that the internet was going to connect us improving our lives dramatically. Boy what a bunch of baloney that turned out to be. The internet has lead directly to the fragmentation of the social experience and the insatiably constant lust for popularity and validation from complete strangers. We are so hyper connected that the rare time that we actually get together with family everyone already knows everything about everyone from their digital profiles. There is nothing new to share leaving us awkwardly speechless as we pass the potato casserole.⠀ ⠀ Many young men now spend more time masturbating to professionally staged pornography then out courting offline women. Just last week my childless friend asked me if I wanted the password to a porn site he had recently purchased access to. Full body silicon dolls that men use to simulate a sexual experience with are now an actual thing costing over 5,000 USD per a doll (don't worry they come with a monthly payment installment plan for those short on cash). ⠀ ⠀ The data transfer in video games is at a record high allowing young men to spend their entire days online playing virtual games instead of working or taking college classes. Women now vastly outnumber men on college campuses. ⠀ ⠀ The two subjects in this photograph came each by themselves. While they were seated closely together it was probable that this was closest either of them had gotten to a member of the opposite sex all day. Is this the internet we need? Toys R Us going out of business was toted by Wall Street as a failure from poor debt restructuring but the reality is much more obvious and grim. There are simply a lot less children being born in Canada and the US. Don't fret, maybe all the Tide Pods men are chewing on for Youtube view will increase their testosterone.⠀ ⠀ #demographicwinter #torontostreetphotography #torontostreet #torontostreets #eatoncentre #eatoncentremall #eatoncentremalltoronto #virtual #togetherbutapart #vr #oculus #oculusnyc #oculusvr #virtualdating #virtualromance #digitaldating #digitialphotography #tidepodchallan

The concept of self only makes sense within the context of others. ⠀ ⠀ Others cannot exist without self and self cannot exist without others. A yin must have a yang. People define themselves by what they aren't. I am not them therefore I am me. Boundaries can be physical but more often than not they are psychological and emotional. ⠀ ⠀ The less pronounced sense of self you have the less fear you will experience in life as you mentally blur into one collective society. How can you be fearful if there is no "other" to fear? We are all one tribe living alone in the universe. The news media will often try to present the "others" as some dangerous group seeking to exterminate us but the reality of the situation is much more benign. ⠀ ⠀ Every country I have been to has the same people. We all share common thoughts of fear of acceptance by our peers and love of others that support us. There are obvious physical differences between us but we are more much alike then we are unalike. The concepts of self and other must become less differentiated in your brain. Only then will panic, apprehension and depression melt like ice in a warm rain forest. ⠀ ⠀ #others #fear #acceptance #urbanspacecadet #lunarsurface #alienenvironment #busstop #busstopselfie #busstopselfies #busstoplife #busstopblues #others #protected #humanzoo #mayaangelou #atfield #fearofthedark #strangerdanger

I was in a bar in Paddington, London, UK back in Maypril a few years ago when a cab driver educated me on "Glove Culture". He stated that when a glove is lost in a city street a person will eventually find it. The finder of the glove will then attempt to place it in a position nearby where the individual that lost the glove will best be able find it should they come back to look for their lost glove.⠀ ⠀ The more effort put into placing the glove into a highly visible and thoughtful position where it would be more likely to be found the higher and more sophisticated the city's population is. Going by his methodology I would have to say Erie's glove culture is some of the best I have seen in my life. ⠀ ⠀ I found this glove near a construction zone artfully and masterfully placed on top of a work cone. Will the owner come back to find it? Unlikely. Instead the glove will stand as a testament to the goodwill of the city's people. "We are one community and we have your back if you happen to make a mistake."⠀ ⠀ #gloveculture #lostglove #lostgloveproject #lostglovescopenhagen #lostglovestokyo #lostglovesofnyc #lostglovesofinstagram #lostglovers #lostgloveschicago #lostglovesofsweden #hopeandlove #lostglovesoferie

Man projects his dwindling masculinity into a fake (it is a car kit see below) Bugatti Veyron (real car retails for 1,700,000.00 USD) in order to attract women. He was pretending to fill the vehicle's tires with air and check their trend while looking around in a Pittsburgh neighborhood known for its young female student population. His pedestrian "Volunteer" shirt carefully worn to send the message to women that "he doesn't care about money" when his fake luxury vehicle sends the truer, exact opposite message in spades.⠀ #gettingold #gettingoldsucks #replica #replicabranded #fake #pua #player #impress #phony #fakepeople #callout #bugatti #bugattiveyronss #bugattifan01 #bugattiveyronsupersport #bugattis #bugattiboys #luxory #luxorycars #luxorylife #tryhard #tryhardeveryday #pickuplife #pickup #oldman ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Tire fitment, ride height, spoiler up while stopped It retracts at low speeds and extends at high speeds, fitment of front wheel vs fender behind the guy, the tail lights that are not exactly in their proper position and the lack of panel gaps on either side of the tail lights. Pervasive gun culture lines a business avenue of a city neighborhood. Here hookah pipes stylized as Kalashnikov rifles represent a commercial attempt to capitalize on the strong association between violence and the middle east. Warfare and the Arabian Peninsula are soulmates that have been deeply in love for over 3000 years. Zealous countries and individuals travel hundreds of miles just to bomb, shoot and kill each other while spewing their own powerful political ideologies on the untiringly deaf, dry desert sand. #prayforpeaceinthemiddleeast #أمل #endviolence #endwar #firearmviolence #middleeast #warinsyria #wariniraq ⠀ #ak47 #ak47hookah #gunculture #gunfanatics #gun #guns #kalashnikov #kalashnikovvgallery #gunviolence #gunculture #middleeast #neverendingwar #arabpeninsula

The Hill District is so close to Pittsburgh's glittering downtown skyscrapers you can almost taste success. Success is a delicacy not tasted for decades in many of the city's socially and financially isolated low income neighborhoods. A stolen car sits alone, jacked up with a single, rotten scrap of wood. The tires long removed and sold. The windows are smashed, a product of frustration or boredom. Despite 40% of the areas population living below the federal poverty rate, life in the Hill District continues. Very young, unchaperoned children play nearby gleefully oblivious to the unfortunate hand they have been dealt. #pittsburgh #incomeinequality #hilldistrict #hilldistrict💈 #incomeequality #workingpoor #havesandhavenots #favela #1stworldpoverty #destitute #economicisolation #lowincome #lowincomefamilies #downtownpittsburgh #pittsburghpa #pittsburghart #pittsburghpride #poverty #povertysucks #poor #ghetto #ghettolife #hope #hopeless #inequality #inequalities #survival #rustbelt #urbandecay #urbanblight

Everyone is a little different. Some people need more space. Sometimes, being different feels a lot like being alone. I have a friend that struggles with depression even thought she is absolutely beautiful inside and out. I would like to dedicate this post to her continued mental health recovery. No one is perfect. ⠀ ⠀ Embrace your unique abilities and characteristics. Reframe and transform your freakish oddities into special strengths. Be true to your standards and your way of doing things. Embrace fear, doubt and pain. Use them as fuel for your flight to success. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #birdsandwires #highcontrastbirds #whiteandblack #whiteandblackphoto #whiteandblackphotography #whiteandblackpic #differentbreed #differentstyle #uniquestyle #blackandwhitephotos #blackandwhitepicture #blackandwhitepics #blackandwhitelovers #blackandwhitelovers⚪️⚫️ #telephonewires #blackandwhiteonly #blackandwhite #bandw #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography #streetpeople #citypeople #cityscenes #cityscene #urbanpeople #urbanscene #urbanscene #aloneforever #alonebutnotlonely #alonegirl

Is technology uniting humanity or alienating us from one another? ⠀ ⠀ We are able to instantly connect to thousands of people via social media at the swipe of a smartphone but recent psychological studies show that we are feeling more isolated and alone than ever. We are physically near each other but a million mental miles away.⠀ ⠀ I post this in a Starbucks full of people packed in tightly like apps in a homescreen. Each of us staring at our own personal illuminated electronic rectangle. Engaged or afraid?⠀ The store is silent except for the light typing on a few laptops and the corporately scripted requisite small chat at the register. ⠀ ⠀ Is this natural?⠀ Is this how humans are meant to live?⠀ Are we using technology or is technology using us? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #starbucks #connected #textingbuddy #texting1d #textingimagines #textingbuddies #textingproblems #textinghim #textingbae #technologythesedays #technologysucks #technologyfail #technologyisamazing ⠀ #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography #streetpeople #citypeople #cityscenes #cityscene #urbanpeople #urbanscene #urbanscene #alonebuttogether #starbuckslovers #twogirlsoneworld #socialmediaaddicts #cellphones #cellphoneaddict #smartphoneaddict #socialmediaaddict

The human race has progressed far because we have learned how to transfer knowledge. This is how we evolved from cave dwelling barbarians to long living creatures capable of creating complicated computer machines, effective pharmaceuticals and advanced airplanes that move in excess of the speed of sound. ⠀ ⠀ At the most basic level, a transfer of condensed experience from the wise aged elders of our community to the young naive youngsters via story telling is at the root of how we are able to accomplish anything. ⠀ ⠀ #storytelling #growingup #learningfromthebest #teaching #teachinglife #teachingthemyoung #learning #transferknowledge #knowledgetransfer #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography #streetpeople #citypeople #cityscenes #cityscene #urbanpeople #urbanscene #urbanscene #communication #nextgeneration #nextgenerations #thefuture #story #storytime #storyteller #elders #oldstory #standingonshouldersifgiants #experiencelife #wisdom ⠀

Sandwiched between the Blue Streak wooden roller coaster and a railway this uninspired cheap Winnie the Pooh bear plush doll sits quietly proped up on a white, aging plastic lawn chair waiting to greet visitors. He is one of ten different sights along the Bessemer Railway System, a popular miniature train ride for children in the Conneaut Lake Amusement Park in north western Pennsylvania. ⠀ ⠀ Dreams are not made of polyester and plastic. My friend Heather asked me to take some headshots so she can submit them to a modeling agency. Her goal is to get her children on television as paid actors so the three of them can make their way out of poverty. They are on government benefits, the father of her children is opiate dependent and incarcerated. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Unfortunately, the chances of her children being stars on TV are about the same as the father getting clean. Heather is a heroine to her children and the father is defined by heroin. It's amazing one letter in a word can be the difference between love and death. Admiration and addiction. Durability and destruction.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #heroine #heroin #streetphotography #redhead #redheads #redheadgirl #redheadgirls #redheadportrait #redheadsisters #addiction #druguse #drugaddiction #protrait #portraitmood #portraits_ig #portrait_shots #portraitlove #happychildren #happykids #redheadchildactor #redheadchildren #redheadgirlsofinstagram #drugabuse #drugabuseawareness #drugabusers #flowercrown #flowers #headwreath #flowercrown #flowergirl

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.⠀ ⠀ In one of the busiest streets in the most densely populated city in the US this man sleeps alone at a bus stop, clinging tightly to a blanket guarded by a faded angry face on his elbow. ⠀ ⠀ Alone. ⠀ ⠀ Alone in the most profound and honest way; a intimate feeling of fear and isolation from anyone remotely familiar, relatable or warm. ⠀ ⠀ There may be a high density of people in large cities but urban pedestrians put up an everyday anti-conversation, anti-interaction shields of necessity against talkative strangers. This is to protect themselves from the near constant pan handling, cat calling and fast talking scammers. Unfortunately, that leaves many individuals without access to daily, soul healing, communication.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #ATfield #hangingonfordearlife #escapism #nyc #nyc🗽 #streetlife #homelesslife #streetpeople #homelessinamerica #homeless #homelessman #hopeforthehopeless #homelesspeople #homelessawareness #aloneman #alone #alonebusstop #sleepingman #sleepingatbusstop #tired #naptime #hangingonbyathread #graying #olddog #oldtimes #remembering #feels #feeling #comfy #comfyasfuck

Ugliness is amazing and fascinating. It is viciously captivating and holds our gaze hostage for much more than a moment. The grotesque is just as rare as the beautiful. Ugliness and beauty are both rare deviants from the norm. Everyday average is all around us. When one thinks really hard about it one starts to realize that ugliness is actually the exact same thing as beauty. They are on the same side of a two sided coin with the other side being boringly mundane. Both polished beauty and truthfully raw ugliness should be appreciated for their unique deviance.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #beauty #ugly #truthful #dilapidatedvisuals #lawrenceville #lawrencevillepgh #upperlawrenceville #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography#cityscenes #cityscene #urbanscene #urbanscene

Profound loss isn’t something that crosses one’s mind on vacation. However, I could not help but feel that way when I visited the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach. After visiting the emotionally dull, completely uninspired Miami Beach Botanical Gardens next door, I walked over to the memorial. There couldn’t be a greater emotional contrast. The sentiment imbued in the sculpture’s incredible razer sharp detail was deep and tormenting. ⠀ ⠀ Over 8,000,000 Ethnic poles and Jewish individuals were exterminated during World War 2. It’s not easy to conceptualize that number. 8,000,000 grains of sands is roughly one liter or three 12 oz soda cans worth of sand. Imagine grabbing a large handful of sand. As sand falls from between your fingers each grain is a soul being extinguished. Hate is a very particular fungus.⠀ ⠀ It only grows in darkness, isolation and fear. It’s impossible to ignore that some of us some look different, but it is an inescapable truth that we all come from the first 50,000 humans in Africa ten thousand years ago. These are our shared great, great, great ect. grandparents. We are all one big family, living on one earth. We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. ⠀ ⠀ #unbelieveablepain #miamibeachholocaustmemorial #holocaust #miamibeach #holocaustmuseum #holocaustmemorial #holocaustmemorialmuseum #jewish #jews #pain #templeemanuel #nyjews #polish #greatermiamijewishfederation #southbeach #florida #sculpture #greenandblue #blueandgreen #greensculpture #fear⠀

Stuck.⠀ Stuck in traffic behind a food delivery truck onloading its nutritious cargo to a local restaurant.⠀ ⠀ Stuck in a dead end low wage food service job. ⠀ ⠀ Stuck tightly between two hard places.⠀ ⠀ There is no escape in sight living pay check to pay check. Upward economic movement frozen so deeply that not even the bright Miami sun can thaw it. Miami is not just a poor city, it’s nearly the poorest. Miami’s median income is the second lowest at 46,946 USD out of the 25 largest metro areas (Tampa is the lowest). With Miami’s economy depending disproportionately on tourism, the impact of disasters like Hurricane Irma on the local economy goes from terrible to catastrophic. ⠀ ⠀ #stuck #alleyway #alleywayart #alleywaystreet #alleywaysandavenues #alleywaysfordays #alleywaysforlife #workingpoor #traffic #stuckbehindatruck #southbeach #miami #miamilife #miamilife🌴 #miamiparties #miamipromoter #miamidade #miamiphotograher #miamiphotoshoot ⠀ #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography #cityscenes #cityscene #urbanscene #urbanscene #incomedisparity #wageslave #wageslavery #survival #struggling

The time between Christmas and NYE is short but I always find this time highly reflective, a sort of week long memento mori if you are familiar with the term. I am reminded that while I have been fortunate enough to have survived another year on Earth many have not. Hugh Hefner, Tom Petty and my 18 yo cousin Dane all failed to make it another rotation around the Sun. ⠀ ⠀ Maybe its me dreading the northeast frost but my last photograph from Miami is deeply introspective and existential. I asked the disabled man if I could take his photo as I do with all subjects unable to physically avoid my lens. ⠀ ⠀ A young child in a chair with wheels passes a dying old man on a chair with wheels. The child is a few years old, the man has a few years left. The infant is naive, still trying to understand the world while the older man knows all to well that time goes fast; all we can do is try to make the good times last. ⠀ ⠀ #theflamminglips #fromchairtochair #thebigquestion #god #ashestoashes #dusttodust #cradletograve #youngandold #aging #lifeisfast #hope #lincolnroad #lincolnroadmall #afterlife #deep #hope #miami #southbeach #miamibeach #southmiamibeach ⠀ #streetphotographyincolors #cityphotography #streetpeople #citypeople #cityscenes #cityscene #urbanpeople #urbanscene #urbanscene #disabled ⠀ ⠀ Btw this photo was very challenging to capture in the low lit environment, with people rushing all around me. It took me an hour and many attempts before i was able to get a stroller in the foreground. I would appreciate that if you liked this post to please leave a comment. It can be as short as a single emoji. Thanks!
